The democratic form of government is readily appreciated over the dictatorship form of government. This saying is not much accurate as both the type of governments has its unique characteristics. The main problem lies in the ruling authority. The growth and development of the country are totally dependent on the policies of the ruling party and its agenda of working.

Comparison of Democracy and Dictatorship

Democracy is the form of government that is made by the people of that country. People in the democratic country have the right to elect their own representatives and enjoy liberty, fraternity, secularism, and equality. The government is made by the decision of the majority. The people of the country enjoy all the freedom and fundamental rights. The rights are guaranteed and protected by the government on the violation.

A dictatorship is a form of government in which there is the rule of a single person or group of people. It does not accept the diversity of interests and people. In this type of government, the ruling person is entitled to a dictator. The total supremacy lies in the dictator. There is no freedom granted to the citizens of that nation. They just have to follow the rules and guidelines of the ruling authority. We can say that the absolute power in this type of government lies in the dictator not in the people of the nation.

Democracy implies that it is the government that is made according to the people’s choice whereas a dictatorship government favors the interest of the particular person. Both forms of government can be beneficial as well as harmful.

Attributes of Democracy and Dictatorship

  • Democracy

A democratic form of government is according to the choice of the people residing in the nation. The elected representative is from the people only. The people of the country directly or indirectly elect their representatives. They are monitored by people. The government is formed taking into account the welfare of the citizens of the country.

The people of the democratic nation can express their ideas and opinions on different policies. There are rights and liberty which are granted to every citizen of the nation. The government cannot cheat the people as it will be dissolved by the decision of the people.

  • Dictatorship

The dictatorship form of government has all its powers centralized in a single person or political party. The ruling person is termed as a dictator. The dictator is only the person to make rules and guidelines for the people of the nation. The total powers are vested in one person or a single political party. The person confers their interests and choice on the people. The people of the country cannot do any kind of objection rather accept the policies.

The people of the nation having dictatorship type of government do not have any kind of liberty i.e. freedom of speech. They are not free to give their advice or opinion on the decision making policy of the government. The decision of the dictator is final and could not be changed at any cost. The decision has to be followed by the people whether it is good or bad for the people.

Certain Differences to be Noted in both Types of Governments

  • Liberty – The democratic form of government gives full freedom and liberty to the people of the nation but in a dictatorship form of government, no liberty is granted to the citizens of the country. They cannot do anything according to their own choice.
  • Freedom of Speech and Expression – The people of the democratic nation have the freedom to express their views and ideas on different decisions and policymaking, but people in a dictatorship type of government have no freedom to express their ideas and opinion on different decisions made by the government.
  • Justice and Law – The people of democratic government can demand justice on the violation of their freedom and rights whereas the people of dictatorship form of government have no right to speak up for any injustice.

Democracy is regarded to be the best form of government. The power in a democracy is mainly vested in the people of the country. The dictatorship type of government has its own benefits on the other hand.
